The Peace Alliance supported by the Mayor’s Office is excited to announce that nominations are now open for the 2011 Peace Awards. Following an inspiring ceremony last year, we are pleased to confirm that the awards ceremony will be hosted once again by the Mayor Boris Johnson at City Hall on 20th September 2011 as part of Peace Week. The recent unrest in London and Cities across Britain highlighted the bravery, resilience and pride of people who despite the riots stood up for the communities they love. We have all been moved by stories of people braving flames to save neighbours, communities rallying together to organise clean ups and communities supporting those who have lost their homes, businesses and livelihoods in the wake of the riots.
The Awards afford us the opportunity to recognise, thank and appreciate people who on a daily basis go beyond the call of duty to make all our lives better. These are the people who put the Great in Great Britain! We are looking for examples of work that helps, inspires and empowers local people and brings peace to neighbourhoods through celebration, reconciliation and collaboration. Examples of past projects include volunteers who have made outstanding contributions to reducing violence in their neighbourhoods, innovative schemes providing alternative routes for young people and faith based groups supporting vulnerable adults and young people.
In all cases recipients will be shown to have contributed to greater community cohesion, safety and peace in local neighbourhoods as well as the Capital. While some categories lend themselves to nominations for major projects impacting across London, we are also keen to recognize the enterprise and commitment of individuals and groups at local level.

- Bravery Award – for an individual who has shown exceptional courage in keeping the Peace
- Community Safety Award (the Metropolitan Commissioner’s Award) – Best community safety / crime reduction initiative.
- Diversity Award – for an individual / organization working across diverse groups to bring about positive changes
- Londoners Peace Award (the Mayors Award) - for an individual who has made the most outstanding contribution to their community.
- Bridge Builders Peace Award - For young people actively building bridges between young people, communities, generations, faiths and cultures.
- Community Engaging Award – for an organization actively involved in engagement and connecting local communities.
- Turn Around Peace Award – ex-offender who has made a positive change in his/her Community.
- Team London Award – (In Partnership with The Mayor’s Office) An award celebrating an individual committed to volunteering their time and resources to the benefit of local communities
- Young Person Peace Award – For students who have made the most outstanding contribution to their school or community.
- DREAM (Develop Real Examples and Mentors) - For a mentor who is actively making an impact in their community and inspiring others.
Rules of Eligibility
- Closing Date for ALL entries is 15th September 2011
- Entries must be fully completed and emailed to the Peace Alliance on official forms or online only.
- All nominees must be either resident Londoners or run businesses in London.
- The Volunteer Award is in association with Team London, the Mayor of London’s volunteering initiative. Nominees must have contributed their time, expertise and or resources to the local community or to an initiative and must not have received remuneration for their contribution. (Basic expenses may be acceptable).
- Additional information and supporting evidence cannot be returned to applicants.
- The awards will be presented on the 20th September 2011 at City Hall, where the winners will be announced.
- Community schemes nominated should show a minimum of 6 months activity. Previously submitted entries are not eligible; except that previous non finalist and non winning entries may be re submitted if there have been significant new successes.
- Self nominations will not be accepted.
