HISTORY

 The week of peace was launched in Haringey in September 2001 as a response to local community safety concerns. Thousands of local residents welcomed this initiative participating in a peace walk, peace concert, prayer walks around crime hotspots and lots of other activities in the borough. Celebrated in Haringey again in 2002 and 2003, the events attracted thousands of local people from diverse backgrounds to a range of activities such as school peace assemblies, sports events, faith and community based action.

DREAM ON

Vision:
Our vision is to see all Londoners engaged in creating a more cohesive society and in celebrating our rich diversity, with the goal of promoting justice, equality and respect.

Mission:
Our mission is to challenge all Londoners to make a positive change in their communities by:

Celebrating its rich diversity of talents, cultures and generations, all of which contribute to making this one of the most vibrant cities in the world;

Collaborating with their fellow-Londoners from all walks of life to raise awareness on community safety and to contribute to greater cohesion and understanding in our communities;

Achieving reconciliation among all our communities, promoting  justice, equality  and   respect,  thus helping reduce crime and the fear of crime in our capital.

 After a dreadful 2007 (and a difficult start to 2008), which saw some 27 young people lose their lives prematurely in street violence, this year’s week of peace will focus on the challenges faced by the youth of our capital city.  In seeking to enhance community cohesion, understanding and peace, young people will be at the heart of our efforts, and their full involvement and commitment is essential to success today and sustainability into the future.
The 2008 Theme is D.R.E.AM.S. – Developing Real Examples And Mentors’.
